ESAM Releases His Wi-Fi Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tier List

Ranking characters based on how well they can perform online and during bad connections has seemingly become hot new things within the fighting game community which makes sense when that's where many players spend most of their competitive time — especially given our current global situation. PG|ESAM has proven himself to be potentially the best Pikachu player in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate right now, so he's decided to jump in on the fun to create his own tier list for the best and worst characters to use while playing on Wi-Fi. Overall, ESAM seems to value two major components for ranking fighters from assumed not great online connections which are speed/mobility and zoning tools. With speed being such a potent factor to what can make a Smash character good online, Sonic the Hedgehog unsurprisingly takes the top spot overall which is actually right in line with the Wi-Fi tier list Liquid|Dabuz originally made. The reason speed demons like Sonic and Zero Suit Samus are ranked among the top here in ESAM's logic is due to how easily they can get a slight lead during a match and then run out the clock by using their tools to play keep-away with an opponent that can't follow them well in the lag. Both players also had characters like Snake, R.O.B., and Samus in their top tiers because, instead of speed, they can keep people out with projectiles with the Pika player noting that Samus' bombs can be a nightmare to work around online. Fighters at the absolute bottom of the list like Marth and Bayonetta are there due to their reliance on strict placements and timing to land big hits/combos which can be nearly impossible to hit if the online isn't absolutely optimal — meanwhile, other similar characters with Lucina and Roy are near the top. As for his Pokemon of choice, ESAM did end up putting Pikachu up in the top tier of online though he admits he does not like to play them online as much due to the differences. Another pro player in GG|Seagull Joe disagreed with that placement in his list, however, placing the mascot character in D tier for his Wi-Fi list. Playing on Wi-Fi for online video games is never the ideal option considering the wireless technology is more prone to packet loss and signal interference among a slew of other issues which can lead to more lag or stuttering matches for fighting games — that some characters can take advantage of more than others. If you are still looking to play Smash Ultimate online, we'd highly suggest buying an Ethernet cable adapter for your Nintendo Switch which are fairly cheap to help mitigate these issues... Though there's no way to avoid an opponent's crappy connection. You can take a look at ESAM's full Wi-Fi tier list for Smash Ultimate below, which is partially ordered at least towards the top, and his stream archive going over his placements in more detail can be found here. Peach Is A Monster In Smash Ultimate, Pros Say

Gonzalo “Zero” Barrios, regarded as the best Smash 4 player in the world, recently needed a safe approach against Ezra “Samsara” Morris Jr., who was playing Peach. It was their both of their final stocks at last weekend’s Smash Ultimate tournament, Smash Conference. Barrios tried hard to bait Morris’s white gown-wearing Peach as she fluttered through the air, but she wasn’t biting. In a millisecond, Morris caught Barrios in a grab, tossed him off-stage and plucked a few turnips from the ground. Morris threw one and caught it again as Barrios clambered back on stage. Then Barrios met Peach’s parasol in the final blow of the unremitting 0-3 set. “I’m sorry guys,” Barrios later tweeted. “Big boss Peach,” he said, had “bodied” him. Princess Peach is an absolute monster in Smash Ultimate. The game’s only been out for a month, so play strategies are still in their nascent stages, but some pros are already saying that Peach may be the game’s frontrunning fighter. In Smash Ultimate, the Mushroom Kingdom princess fights with turnips, her companion Toad, her parasol, her hips and flurries of hearts, and, on top of all of that, she can float in the air. Top players say her move combos and powerful aerial attacks, in combination with her ability to float, make her unbelievably strong in the latest Smash game. Peach wasn’t at all bad in any prior Smash games; in fact, she’s always hovered around the middle or top of pros’ tier lists. Some mechanical changes that Ultimate introduced have rocketed her to the very top of multiple pro players’ early tier lists. One is William “Leffen” Hjelte, who released a tier list yesterday that placed Peach even a little above the top tier of Smash fighters, near the border of the chart. “Peach breaks so many rules,” he said in his YouTube video explaining his list. Smash Ultimate has made it easier for all fighters to land on the ground after being in-air. Hjelte explains that Peach’s super strong aerial attacks are difficult to punish because of this, and also, Peach can float a little above the ground for a long time, so she can use her aerial attacks very close to the stage. Other fighters’ aerial attacks in Smash Ultimate suffer a small nerf when they’re executed near the ground, giving Peach an advantage. On top of that, “Her off-stage game is good enough to win with,” Hjelte said. When she’s back on-stage, he continued, “She has amazing edge guards,” referring to strategies that prevent opponents from returning to the stage. In his tier list video from mid-December, Barrios described Peach as “the best combo character in the game. Peach received only improvements from Smash 4. She was an above-decent character in Smash 4 that in this game they buffed tremendously.” Barrios went on to list a slew of attacks that Peach can use to kill opponents, including her dash attack, her up-air, her forward-air, her back-air, her neutral air, and several others. At Smash Conference, Morris wasn’t the only Peach player who beat him. In what Smash player Antony “MuteAce” H. Described as his “very first upset in Ultimate,” he sent Barrios to the loser’s bracket. G/O Media may get a commission Morris, who had ended up placing second at Smash Conference, told Kotaku that he’s won every local tournament he’s played with her. “But combos are only one thing,” he said. “She is a quick combo speedy machine character that has the highest damage output in the game out of any character.” So, Peach is a force to be reckoned with, according to several pros, but can the average player exploit what makes her great in high-level tournaments? Tier lists are meant to reflect how fighters play when they’re completely optimized by super-players. A lot of the time, they mean nothing to Joe Smash Bros. Who’s just looking for an easy way to beat his friends. Morris contests this when it comes to Peach, however. “With enough practice and dedication to Peach, you can exploit all her strong traits and cover her weak spots. Maybe get into the training room for an hour and get all your combos down and your Peach is already a threat!”

ESAM Releases A Tier List For Version 7.0 Of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

"Pikachu busted." This is something you'll often hear from PG|ESAM regarding his main character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Is it any surprise to hear that ESAM believes Pikachu to be the best character in version 7.0 of the game? Although the electric mouse Pokémon's results do not yet reflect it, Pikachu is often regarded as a top tier in many top player lists. Notably, Pikachu is also currently ranked as the best on our community voted tier list out of 76 listed challengers. According to ESAM, Pikachu has access to the free approaches thanks to Thunder Jolt, the best edgeguarding, the best disadvantage state, as well as insane combos and kill confirms. Having said that, ESAM has noted that he believes Pikachu to still be unoptimized, which offers a potential explanation as to why the character isn't winning all the tournaments yet. During the video, ESAM has noted that Pikachu has the least number of losing matchups in the game, ranging from two to four. Pikachu only has even matchups against Peach, Lucas, Snake, Mario, and Pac-Man. Other fighters in ESAM's top 5 categories along with Pikachu are Joker, Peach, Shulk, and Wario. After those challenges, Zero Suit Samus, Pokémon Trainer, Palutena, Wolf, and Snake have been positioned in the top 10. In total, ESAM spends nearly two hours explaining the strengths and weaknesses of every character in the 7.0 meta.
